Introduction
The fitness gains from indoor training are real and they transfer. Almost everything else about the experience does not, and the differences run in both directions: some things are easier indoors, some are harder, and several are simply different in ways that catch people out on their first ride back outside. What follows is a comparison of the two, and an honest account of what a winter on Zwift does and does not do for your outdoor riding.
Constant Effort vs Coasting
One of the first things many notice: Zwifting tends to be a more constant effort. Outside, especially on group rides or commutes, you often get little breaks - coasting on downhills, stopping for traffic, cornering, etc. On Zwift, you're pedaling almost continuously (unless you deliberately stop or supertuck). There are no stop signs, no traffic lights, and your avatar can corner at 50 kph without braking. So a one-hour ride on Zwift might have you pedaling nearly the whole time, whereas outdoors you might freewheel 10-20% of the time. This can make indoor rides feel harder for the same average power because you have less rest. As some put it, "Zwift miles can be harder than road miles" in that sense. However, this steady effort is great for training - it builds endurance and keeps you in zone. Keep in mind, though, it can fatigue you more initially since you're not getting those micro-breaks.
No Wind or Weather (But Plenty of Sweat)
On Zwift, you don't deal with headwinds, crosswinds, or temperature fluctuations. It's always sort of like a calm day (though Zwift's environment may show windmills turning, it doesn't affect you). That can be nice - no brutal headwind slogs. However, it also means no cooling wind on your body from moving through air. Indoors, you'll get hot because your fan, and you should have a fan, is not as effective as the 20 mph breeze outside. Heat is a big factor: many notice their heart rate runs higher for the same power indoors due to overheating. Zwift removes the weather entirely, so ventilation becomes your problem instead. The lack of wind resistance also means on flats, maintaining speed might be conceptually easier, but Zwift compensates with its own physics (draft, etc.). Still, you might find holding 200W on a flat in Zwift gets you a higher speed than outside if outside had wind or poor road surface.
Terrain and Steering
Zwift automatically steers for you (unless you use the new steering feature or have a Sterzo device). This means you don't have to pick lines or worry about crashing on a turn. Outside, bike handling and balance are part of the skillset - indoors, you're essentially on rails. This can be a blessing (you can't skid out on Zwift no matter how hard you sprint around a virtual corner) but also means Zwift doesn't train cornering or real bike handling. If you exclusively ride indoors, your engine will be strong but remember to ease back into practicing handling outside - take some turns, etc., to get comfortable again. Zwift is starting to add steering and even braking in races (FutureWorks), but it's optional and not the norm yet.
Psychological Suffering and Focus
Many have noted you can often push harder on Zwift, especially in races or workouts, because you can safely bury yourself without fear of crashing. As pro rider Zach Nehr said, you can sprint with eyes closed and ride until you almost pass out, and it's fine [2]. You're stationary, no hazards. This can unlock a new level of suffering. On the flip side, some find indoor riding mentally tougher in terms of boredom or motivation - but Zwift's visuals and competition help a lot. Outdoors, beautiful scenery or the fun of speed can make efforts feel easier. Indoors, you might need music or races to distract from the pain. But once in the zone, Zwift lets you focus purely on wattage. No traffic or potholes to worry about - just you vs. power. That can lead to very high quality sessions, arguably more focused than outside where interruptions happen. Removing the external variables is exactly what makes an interval target hittable: there is no junction, no descent and no crosswind deciding your power for you.
Power Differences - Indoor vs Outdoor FTP
It's common to have a different FTP or power profile indoors vs outdoors. Often, people find their indoor FTP is a bit lower than outdoor. Why? Likely due to cooling issues, mental motivation, and the fact that outdoors the bike can move under you (in a sprint especially, you can rock the bike and recruit more muscles). Also, trainer feel matters - some trainers feel more road-like than others. If your indoor power is lower, don't sweat it - use the indoor number for indoor training zones. Conversely, a few folks produce higher power indoors (especially short efforts) because they can concentrate and there's no risk or need to handle the bike. But the general trend noted by coaches is indoor FTP ~5-10% lower for many [5]. This is supported by studies and coaches noting athletes often test lower indoors, possibly due to heat and lack of cooling [4]. With good fans and acclimation, the gap can shrink. Just know it's a thing, so if you can do 250W outside for an hour but only 235W on the trainer, you're not alone and not doing anything wrong.
Drafting Dynamics
Zwift has drafting physics to simulate pack riding. They work fairly well, but there are quirks. For example, there's the "sticky draft" where if you catch up to someone, the game might "stick" you behind them until you put in a bit more power to pass - meant to simulate that slight ease when you reach someone's wheel, but it can surprise you in races. Drafting in Zwift definitely helps a lot (can save 20-30% effort like IRL). But some differences: no crashes means riders can swarm like a dense blob in ways you wouldn't IRL (5 abreast in a road, etc.). There's also no risk to overlapping wheels, so people can be aggressive with position digitally. Outside, you might hesitate or give more space, inside you'll just slot in automatically. So Zwift racing often has a very fast start (no penalty for going hard early, no crashes, everyone wants to stay in draft) [5] [6], whereas outside you might have more tactical cageyness or corner slowing. It's similar but not identical. Also, climbing in Zwift has no balancing or low-speed wobbles - you could be at 4 km/h grinding 20% slope and it's fine (in reality, you might topple if too slow or if you don't maintain balance). This means Zwift can simulate super steep stuff easier.
Physical Bike Feel
On a trainer, your bike is stationary (unless you have a rocker plate or Wahoo Kickr Bike that tilts). You don't get the natural side-to-side sway when sprinting or climbing out of saddle. This can cause different muscle stresses - e.g., some folks feel more saddle discomfort indoors because you're seated and static more. Or your upper body might not engage the same way (or in a different way trying to stabilize). Outside, the bike moves and your core and arms move to counterbalance. Indoors, you might need to make a conscious effort to stand up occasionally or wiggle to avoid numbness because you don't shift as much naturally. Some invest in rocker plates to allow a bit of motion which can help comfort.
Safety and Convenience
Obviously, Zwift is safer in terms of traffic and road hazards - no cars, and no real crashes. This safety means you can do intervals on demand (try doing a 20-min uninterrupted threshold interval outside - possible in rural areas, but many of us hit a stop or hill or something that interferes). On Zwift, you can structure a workout and nail it exactly. That is a huge training benefit. However, being indoors means no bike handling practice, no wind-in-face, and you might miss some skills like dealing with pack movement at high speed or descending skills. So complement Zwift with some outdoor rides when you can to keep those sharp.
Social Factor
Both have social aspects but in different ways. Outdoors, you might chat side by side, enjoy a cafe stop. On Zwift, you can "ride with" friends across the world, text via Companion app, use Discord for voice chat (some group rides do this). It's surprisingly social in group rides or races (lots of banter and encouragement in events). But it's also easy to ignore everyone and just ride, though a Ride On costs nothing. Some who feel nervous in group rides IRL (maybe due to skill or fitness differences) find Zwift a friendly, lower-pressure environment. You can always hit the pedal harder or ease off without physically being left behind on a road somewhere - worst case, you get dropped in Zwift and finish at your own pace. And no one sees if you're shelled out in your pain cave. It equalizes some things - e.g., drafting in Zwift doesn't care if you're a small or large rider as long as w/kg appropriate, etc. People can't physically see you, which can be both a pro and con.
Translation to Outdoor Fitness
Perhaps the biggest question: does Zwift training make you stronger outside? Absolutely, yes - fitness is fitness. Many have seen huge improvements by doing Zwift workouts and races over winter and then come spring, they drop their buddies on climbs. Zwift helps you do structured training effectively, which yields results. You do have to adjust back to things like riding in a pack, sudden attacks not on a fixed interval, wind, etc., but your engine will likely be bigger. One example: Zwift racing really sharpens your high-end power and ability to respond to surges - useful for criteriums or fast group rides. It also builds mental toughness (those last few minutes of a Zwift race hurt like a TT). Outdoor riding does have some unique challenges like learning to dose efforts on long climbs (Zwift can simulate, but outside adds weather, altitude, etc.). But on balance, time spent on Zwift definitely translates into performance outside. People often comment that an hour on Zwift feels equivalent (fitness-wise) to more than an hour outside because of the constant pedaling - so you might even get more efficient training.
One caution: if you plan to race outdoors, make sure to reintroduce outdoor rides before the event to re-familiarize with drafting, cornering, etc. Some pure Zwift racers have hopped into an IRL race and found the cornering scarier or pack movement unpredictable compared to the controlled environment of Zwift. It's all cycling, but the sensory experience is different (speed perception, etc.). Gradually ease into it and you'll be fine.
Indoor Gains, Outdoor Wins
Many top pros now incorporate Zwift sessions. During 2020, lots of pros even raced virtually and later said it helped keep them sharp. Zwift Academy has even identified talent for real pro contracts, showing virtual racing skills and power can align with real world success (with some transition). So if it works for them, it works for us.
Health and Comfort
One more difference: indoors you might need to be more mindful of cooling, which means more fan than you think, and of hydration (you might sweat more indoors [7], so drink and have a towel). Outdoors, wind cools sweat, indoors you'll be drenched. Keep a mat to protect floor. Also, trainers can be tough on your bike (stress on frame, chain wear since constant pressure). Do maintenance like you would outside - lube chain, etc. And maybe swap an old rear tire or dedicated trainer tire if using a wheel-on trainer to avoid shredding your nice road tire.
Conclusion
The comparison people actually want settled is whether indoor training makes you faster outdoors, and the answer is that the engine transfers almost completely while nothing else does. Aerobic fitness, threshold power and the ability to hold an effort are the same rider inside and out. Handling, descending, cornering and reading a road are not trained at all by a machine that cannot fall over.
The practical consequence is that a winter of indoor riding usually leaves you arriving at spring fitter than you left autumn and rustier than you expect. Plan the first few outdoor rides accordingly: the legs will be ready before the hands are.
On the power discrepancy specifically, if your indoor numbers read lower than your outdoor ones, work through heat, continuity and measurement in that order before concluding anything about your fitness. A bigger fan resolves this more often than any other single change.
